David Cook, 'Singin' in the Rain'

This is a must see for all you David Cook Fans out there. He's performing in a High School musical production of "Singing in the Rain," in the Donald O'Connor role... singing "Make 'Em Laugh." He's dancing and doing acrobatic flips and cracking up the audience. The Examiner article accompanying it verifies it's DC... but I wonder if the singing is live or if he had recorded it because he should be more out of breath and the song should have some rough spots due to the dancing, and it sounds so smooth. I'll have to investigate further. I just which there was as tighter spot to see just how adorable he is.

I almost thought it *was* the Donald O'Connor track from the movie but it seems like Cook is actually singing, since his voice is stronger some places than others, and there's a little hint of out-of-breath or exertion in a few spots. The routine is of course almost move-for-move O'Connor's terrific choreography from the film, including the always popular dummy bit, but it sure seems to be an authentic live performance to me. It's got that not-quite-perfect quality that makes it so impressive. Great find! The kid's got chops!

Cook is terrific and the voice is obviously his, but to me it sounds dubbed over the dance routine. Listen to the end, when he's upside down. The voice is just too clear for that position. If he can actually sing and dance like that, WOW! Try to dig up some more videos on him, Scott.

I've listened to it on two other sites with some better quality, and Lisa's right... there are three spots (especially when he jumps on that bar the two guys carry across the stage) where his voice drops out a little... it's just that at 17 or 18 years old I think he was in good physical shape and his strong voice was already in place. So he really can sing and dance at the same time. Also, he sort of let's the music play during the cartwheels and immediately picks up again when he's upright, which is a great trick. His flip into and thru the wall was great (just like in the movie!) I think like most teenagers (well, the ones who aren't obese) he just didn't get winded. If you watch "Dancing with the Stars-a post on that coming this week!), the kids competition has child-dancers rangning from 9 to 14 and they're like robots! They go nuts on the floor and come back barely out of breath! So that's my take on it.

I agree about the dubbed voice in parts; I also wondered why we aren't hearing more mic interference when he's jostling around. I thought the orchestra sometimes sounded canned, but then not. Puzzling!

Boy, we need some forensic analysis on this one! :-)

Well it does sound like him, but how could we ever know with such a long shot. It could be anyone on that stage! Hey Lisa, I like your TV avatar!
